Transformations: Summary and Suggestions

I. Purpose of Practicum

          As a student, learning has always been my priority and my greatest passion. I strongly believe in lifelong learning, embracing every opportunity to expand my knowledge whenever and wherever. That’s why this practicum was an incredibly enjoyable and meaningful experience for me. I was able to explore new teaching techniques, immerse myself in different traditions, and most importantly—learn a new language. Learning Bahasa Indonesia made me realize its surprising similarities with the Filipino language, which I used to my advantage in coping with daily conversations. Over time, I became more familiar and confident in using it, especially inside the classroom. I found comfort in this language, as it became my bridge to connect with my students and mentors at SMP-SC.

          As a pre-service teacher, I sincerely appreciate how the students, teachers, staff, and administrators welcomed me with open arms. They treated me as their own, and I will forever be grateful for their warmth and kindness. Even within a short span of time, I found myself growing attached to them. Their guidance and unwavering support made me appreciate my chosen profession even more. This experience was a testament to how kindness and professionalism can overcome language barriers, proving that true connection goes beyond words.

          As a future Mathematics educator, this practicum deepened my understanding and appreciation of Mathematics as a universal language. The most profound realization I had was that Mathematics transcends verbal communication—it speaks for itself through numbers, symbols, and problem-solving processes.

II. Procedures and Outcomes of Practicum

          My college freshman self would be so thrilled and surprised that I was able to participate in the SEAMEO program that was just introduced to me that time. From preparing and submitting requirements, to attending the interview with the host school, to booking flights, and packing bags, this journey has been an incredible experience from start to finish.

    Looking back, I remember how overwhelming it felt to navigate all the preparations—the countless forms, the anticipation before the interview, and the excitement of planning an international trip which seemed like a huge leap out of my comfort zone. But taking that leap turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life as every step was worth it with a mix of excitement, nervousness, and growth.

          Being part of the SEAMEO program has not only broadened my academic and cultural horizons but also strengthened my confidence and independence. Meeting educators and students from different backgrounds, adapting to a new environment, and embracing the challenges of international exchange have truly shaped me. I learned to adapt to new environments, embrace different cultures, and step up to challenges with confidence.

          My younger self would have never imagined that what once seemed like a distant opportunity would become a defining moment in my journey. And now, having lived it, I’m grateful for the growth, the connectionsI made, the lessons I learned, and the memories I created that will stay with me forever.

III. The Challenges of Practicum

          The only challenge internally is being able to persuade confidence with knowledge and power all throughout the practicum. Bearing in mind that I am alone in a new place, meeting new people, turning to a new age, learning a new language, interacting with new traditions– if you let your weak system eat you, you won’t be able to survive. That’s why I always made sure to portray preparedness in all aspects be it in my outfit, my lesson, my conversational skills, and such.

          And for the other challenges, language barrier isn’t a joke. Even though you could survive with mobile and online translators, it could still impact the fact that quick and real-time responses become overdue. Communicating effectively in an unfamiliar language goes beyond just translating words—it’s about understanding context, tone, and cultural nuances. Even with mobile and online translators, the delay in processing and responding can make interactions awkward or even frustrating at times.

         Overcoming the language barrier required more than just tools; it demanded adaptability, persistence, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Slowly, I found myself picking up common phrases, understanding expressions, and growing more comfortable in conversations. The effort was exhausting, but the sense of accomplishment was worth it.

          Looking back, I realize that struggling through the language barrier was not just about learning words—it was about building connections, stepping outside my comfort zone, and proving to myself that I could thrive in any environment.

       There were moments when I struggled to express my thoughts clearly, and sometimes, I worried about being misunderstood. Simple conversations that should have been quick and effortless became exercises in patience and perseverance. But through these challenges, I learned the value of active listening, non-verbal communication, and the courage to keep trying.

IV. Overall Impression

     I have always loved and been passionate about teaching, but my time at SMP Sint Carolus made me love teaching even more. This experience deepened my passion, reaffirmed my dedication to my profession, and strengthened my belief in the power of education.

     No words can fully capture how much this journey has meant to me, but one thing is certain—this is only the beginning of an even greater adventure ahead.

V. Suggestions for and Improvements

While my practicum experience at SMP Sint Carolus was incredibly enriching, there are always areas for improvement to enhance the program for future participants. Here are some key suggestions: 

1. Pre-Departure Language Preparation – Although learning Bahasa Indonesia on-site was a valuable experience, having basic language training before departure could help future participants adapt faster. Short online language modules or introductory classes focusing on classroom-related phrases and common expressions would be beneficial.

2. More Structured Cultural Orientation – While immersing in a new culture is an exciting part of the practicum, a more comprehensive cultural orientation before arriving at the host school could ease the transition. Sessions on local traditions, school norms, and classroom etiquette would help pre-service teachers adjust more smoothly.

3. Reflection and Feedback Sessions – Implementing regular reflection sessions during the practicum, where participants can discuss challenges and share insights with their mentors, could create a continuous learning cycle. Additionally, gathering feedback from students and local teachers could help refine future approaches. This practicum has been a life-changing experience, and while there were challenges, each one contributed to my growth as an educator and as an individual.

Implementing these improvements could further enhance the experience for future participants, ensuring that they maximize their learning, adapt more seamlessly, and contribute meaningfully to their host schools
